Trump Administration Accused Of Rallying UN Member States Against Abortion Rights | Politics

The Guardian reported on Monday a letter, revealing the intention of high-level US officials to oppose UN policies that promote sexual and reproductive health. Apparently, at the UN Assembly there would be a “growing coalition” of countries that, with the help of the Trump administration, could rally against abortion.

The letter, signed by the Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, said “As a key priority in global health promotion, we respectfully request that your government join the United States in ensuring that every sovereign state has the ability to determine the best way to protect the unborn and defend the family as the foundational unity of society vital to children thriving and leading healthy lives”.

One of the last attempt of USA to sign a joint statement which involved the removal of any reference to sexual and reproductive health policy as abortion, had been in May. The statement, presented To World Health Organization read “We do not support references to ambiguous terms and expressions in the context of the WHO, since they cause confusion and misunderstanding“.

This letter belongs to one of the many dangerous Trump administration attempts to block the most important right to health, which has not yet been guaranteed in every state of America. Alabama is the last great example, with doctors who perform abortions in that state facing up to 99 years in prison.
