A Clue remake is in the works. Further proof that anything with brand recognition – even a campy film adaptation of a board game – gets Hollywood producers interested. Strangely, this idea actually has genuine names attached to it. Jason Bateman, fresh off winning an Emmy for his directorial work on Netflix’s Ozark, is in talks to direct and star in the film alongside Ryan Reynolds.
Reynolds has been attached to the project since signing a three year producing deal with Fox (now owned by Disney, of course) last January. He’s been developing the script too. The original announcement had Reynolds’ Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penning the remake, but that’s no longer the case.
Reynolds will produce under his Maximum Effort banner alongside Hasbro’s film division, Allspark Pictures. This would mark the second on-screen pairing of Reynolds and Bateman, who both previously starred in the 2011 comedy The Change-Up. That film hasn’t lasted long in the mind, but since then Reynolds has become a star thanks to Deadpool and Bateman top lined Game Night, the best comedy of 2018.
So the thinking is that putting the two together once more will work much better. The original Clue famously hit cinemas with three possible endings. With bonus features and potential streaming rights nowadays, expect something similar here. How much audiences will actually care about a Clue remake is worth wondering though.
