Director Francis Ford Coppola has ignited again the debate against super-hero movies (and, in particular, Marvel movies), after Martin Scorsese had started it earlier this month.
The main point of the controversy is the same: Marvel movies are considered “not cinema”, or, at least, a lower level cinema product. Coppola used even stronger words than his collegue Scorsese, when interviewed in Lyon: “When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he’s right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration”.
He added: “I don’t know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again. Martin was kind when he said it’s not cinema. He didn’t say it’s despicable, which I just say it is”.
This controversy has also been ignited by such actors like Jennifer Aniston, who said she felt the superhero films were “diminishing” film roles and that she isn’t “really interested in living in a green screen”.
Scorsese and Aniston’s words have already caused strong rebuttals from directors James Gunn, Joss Whedon, Kevin Smith and Taika Waititi, and from actor Robert Downey Jr., who played Iron Man in the Marvel films. We are sure that Coppola’s words will provoke similar reactions as well.
