Vince Vaughn and Sharon Horgan are on board to star in the dark romantic comedy, The Last Drop. If that title sounds familiar, it’s because the film has been in the works since at least 2012. Back then, Justin Timberlake was going to star, but he’s no longer involved.
Vaughn will instead play the lead role of culinary show host Clay Mason. His life of endless meals and long nights of drinking have brought his career to a tipping point. But just as his debilitating lifestyle begins to unwind his career, he crosses paths with Holly – played by Horgan – “a spirited antiques dealer who sees through Clay’s bravado and helps him find the strength to pull out of his tailspin”.
Christopher Storer, who has directed stand-up specials such as Hasan Minhaj‘s Homecoming King, will make his feature directorial debut with the project. Brandon Murphy, Phillip Murphy, and Elizabeth Chomko have written the script. Shawn Levy and 21 Laps are producing alongside Dan Levine and Dan Cohen.
This sort of project would have been par for the course for Vaughn a decade ago, but he’s stepped into darker territory in recent years. Horgan has broken out as a comedy star thanks to Catastrophe, which she both created and starred in, garnering BAFTA and Emmy award nominations in the process.
The romantic comedy is no longer the juggernaut it once was in the 90s. However, Netflix has helped bring about a revival of sorts, and it will be interesting to see how a darker romcom like this performs. The ease of having new comedies available to stream have likely helped lead to a newfound love of the genre. But will audiences still leave their house and pay to see a romcom in the cinema?
