Per THR, Paul Thomas Anderson is gearing up for his next movie. Having re-teamed with Daniel Day-Lewis (for likely the final time) on Phantom Thread, the director is reportedly taking his next project back to a familiar place in his oeuvre – the San Fernando Valley in the 1970s.
The film will reportedly revolve around a high school student who is also a successful child actor. THR adds that “the project features a multitude of roles and could be ensemble in nature or have intersecting storylines”. That makes it sound reminiscent of Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Inherent Vice. The former two, along with Punch-Drunk Love, were set in the San Fernando Valley where Anderson grew up.
Anderson rarely repeats himself and always finds ways to surprise his audience. Despite the familiar setting and basic synopsis that draws comparisons to his other films, expect this to be another original masterpiece. High expectations? Sure, but PTA’s worst output is at least fascinating, and his best is up there with some of the greatest movies of all time.
Production on the as-yet-untitled project is expected to begin in February.
