A new trailer has finally arrived for The New Mutants, which confirms that the film will indeed be released. That may sound dramatic, but considering the production hell the movie has been through, it was conceivable that 20th Century Fox (now under Disney control, of course) would just pull the plug and cut their losses.
The film was shot way back in 2017 by Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars). It was conceived during the period when Fox’s Deadpool and Logan both hit big, and convinced the studio that more adult-oriented comic book movies were viable. Thus, Boone pitched a horror-tinged X-Men spinoff, and the studio bit. However, that’s where the problems began.
First, Boone reportedly shot a more toned-down version of the movie he pitched. Despite a first trailer, Fox then pushed the film back from its original April 2018 release to February 2019, ostensibly for reshoots. But those reshoots – reportedly intended to make the film more of a horror – never happened, and the film was pushed again, this time to August 2019.
Then it fell into limbo after Disney acquired Fox, and it became very possible that the film would never see the light of day. Disney+ also became a possibility. But despite those fears, The New Mutants will indeed be getting released. And Boone himself took to Instagram to assert that this version of the film is the one he’s proud of, despite the lack of reshoots.
So with no reshoots and no additional footage, this new trailer is…basically the same as the old one. The film looks rather generic and feels kind of out of place considering the superhero world it would have been released into back in 2018. Now that we’re post-Endgame, post-Disney/Fox merger and post-a lot of other things, it feels like a relic from a different time, despite only being delayed 2 years.
There’s a chance the movie is complete trash, as has been rumoured for a long time, but if it was that bad, Disney probably wouldn’t have released it all. Expect it to be passable at best, and likely forgotten soon after. Usually there’s more optimism and hope when a trailer is released, but considering the problems The New Mutants has gone through, it’s hard to expect a lot.
The film stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Alice Braga. It hits cinemas April 3, 2020.
