Rodney Barnes (The Boondocks, Everybody Hates Chris) has been tapped to write the script for the feature creature being developed at New Regency by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island). Michael B. Jordan‘s Outlier Society is also producing.
Little is known about the project – originally announced last March – except that it will be based in Detroit. That setting is not a surprise, as Vogt-Roberts grew up in the city and maintains a strong relationship with the local artistic community. In 2011 he co-founded The Detroit Creativity Project, a non-profit that fosters the city’s youth through improv comedy.
Barnes’ work on The Boondocks and Everybody Hates Chris earned him both a Peabody and a WGA Award, respectively. Recent credits include writing episodes of Runaways and American Gods, and he’s currently working on HBO’s untitled 1980s-era Los Angeles Lakers drama pilot.
There’s not much more to add until we get more information. Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island made a healthy $567 million worldwide back in 2017, and set the stage for Adam Wingard‘s Godzilla vs. Kong, set to hit cinemas Friday, November 20. That success likely gave him the cachet for this original monster movie. It will be fascinating to see what he and Barnes come up with.
