Steven Soderbergh just got done with another prolific year, making two movies in 2019 for Netflix. He’s not close to finished. The filmmaker has signed a three-year deal to make films and TV shows for both HBO and it sister streaming service, HBO Max.
Considering this is Soderbergh, a guy who just loves making movies any way he possibly can, he’s already got a project film in the can and ready to go. First up is Let Them All Talk, which stars Meryl Streep and Dianne Wiest. It focuses on a celebrated author who takes a journey with some old friends to have some fun and heal old wounds. The film will launch on HBO Max later this year.
Soderbergh said in a statement: “This arrangement grew out of talks Michael Sugar and I were having with Sarah Aubrey during the negotiations for Let Them All Talk, and there were four things tractor-beaming me toward this deal:
One, I have a history with both HBO and Warner Bros; two, my definition of a good product, a good process, and a good working culture is shared by the WarnerMedia family; three, the wide range of potential outlets aligns with my range of interests, and four: I get to witness and participate in the building of something new at a very large scale. Oh, and there is a financial aspect, so that’s probably five”.
Soderbergh has worked with HBO before on plenty of projects, including Behind The Candlelabra, The Knick and Mosaic. HBO president Casey Bloys called him “an indefatigable innovator”, and added: “we couldn’t be more excited to continue our relationship with Steven and provide a home for his future projects”.
Of course Soderbergh, being the workaholic that he is, actually still has another film set to hit Netflix at some point. The 1950s crime drama Kill Switch, which stars Don Cheadle, Sebastian Stan and Josh Brolin, will begin filming next month in Detroit. The man never stops.
