Cartoon Girl, an acclaimed script which ended up on the 2014 Black List is finally going to see the light of day. Oakhurst Entertainment and Gloria Sanchez Productions have secured the rights to Randall Green‘s script, and they’ve entered talks with Amanda Marsalis – who has helmed episodes of The Umbrella Academy, Ozark and Westworld – to direct the film.
The screenplay is described as a dramatic comedy, and revolves around a young boy who discovers that the cartoon character he’s in love with is based on a real girl. With his single father in tow, he embarks on a road trip adventure to find her and profess his love.
Green has previously written for the Showtime series Billions and the Netflix film The Perfect Date. He was also recently tapped by the streaming giant to adapt New York Times journalist and Born To Run author Christopher McDougall‘s book, Running With Sherman.
While it’s tempting to get very excited about a script from the Black List finally being produced, they don’t always turn out as well as people in the industry envisioned.
Although it’s an annual list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, screenplays for films such as Things We Lost In The Fire, The Beaver and Draft Day topped the list in their respective years, and none of those films have lasted particularly long in the public consciousness. Hopefully Cartoon Girl can live up to its potential.
