Ron Howard To Direct Action-Thriller ‘The Fixer’ | Film News

Ron Howard recently finished production on his upcoming Netflix film Hillbilly Elegy, and he’s quickly moving onto his next project. The Oscar-winning director will reportedly direct the action-thriller The Fixer for Paramount.

From an original pitch and script by Tyler Hisel, the film is based on the incredible true story of a disgraced FBI agent, who at the height of the Cold War, is tapped by the CIA to lead a ragtag team of CIA operatives and Chicago mobsters on an unlikely mission to try to assassinate Fidel Castro. The project is reportedly high priority at Paramount.

Howard – in the least disrespectful way – is like a poor man’s Clint Eastwood. Both former actors turned directors, each continue to get work because they finish production on time and their films usually make steady money. Howard just doesn’t have as many great movies as Eastwood, and usually flip fops between a good one and a totally forgettable one.

Case in point, before taking over Solo: A Star Wars Story, can you name Howard’s two previous movies? They were 2017’s Inferno and 2015’s In The Heart Of The Sea, yet prior to those was the excellent F1 drama Rush, but two years before that came the comedy-drama The Dilemma, which, yes, is a real film.

The Fixer may have to rely on some charismatic stars to take it to another level. The premise is solid though, and plenty of actors should be interested. As for Hillbilly Elegy, that film stars Amy Adams, Haley Bennett, and Glenn Close, and is based on J.D. Vance‘s book with a script by Vanessa Taylor. It follows a man recalling his life growing up in the Midwest with Appalachian values.

It’s unclear when it will hit Netflix, but it should be sometime this year.
