After a lean few years since helming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Gareth Edwards has found his next directorial project. It’s an untitled sci-fi film for New Regency, who will finance and produce alongside Edwards’ Rogue One producer Kiri Hart.
The project is an original idea by Edwards. It’s a near-future sci-fi story, something he has excelled at in the past with films like Monsters. Plot specifics are currently undisclosed, though sources say casting is underway and the hope is shoot this summer.
Edwards took the cachet he earned from Monsters – a film he directed, wrote, was the cinematographer and production designer for – and went on to direct 2014’s Godzilla, which grossed over $500 million worldwide, and landed him the Star Wars gig. Rogue One naturally grossed over $1 billion worldwide, so it’s not like Edwards has been struggling to find work since then.
Reportedly he’s been waiting for the right project to come along, and it looks like this is it. New Regency apparently jumped at the chance to produce the film and got in quick before a bidding war could commence.
We’ll wait to hear more details on the project. Fans of Edwards will be hoping that, after back-to-back franchise films, this is the true original Monsters follow up he perhaps would have got to make earlier in his career if Hollywood hadn’t shifted so drastically to the franchise model over the last two decades.
