CrossFire, one of the most popular first person shooter games in the world, is the latest video game a studio will take a crack at developing for the big screen. Sony and Smilegate, the Japanese developer that created the game, are teaming for the movie adaptation.
If you’re having a little deja vu and seem to recall this being announced before, you’re right. The movie was originally announced back in 2015, with Fast & Furious producer Neal H. Moritz attached to produce through his company Original Film. However, myriad delays stalled the film, although Moritz and Original film are still on board as co-financiers.
The Strain writer Chuck Hogan has penned the script. He also wrote the screenplay for the Michael Bay film 13 Hours, and wrote the novel which turned into Ben Affleck‘s Oscar-nominated film The Town.
Originally released in South Korea in 2007, CrossFire has grown exponentially over the past decade and a half into a dedicated player base of 660 million registered users, generating over $10 billion in revenue. It’s a team-based multiplayer shooter about a global conflict between two mercenary factions, so the potential for an international blockbuster action film is definitely there.
Of course, we all know that most video game adaptations have fared poorly in the past. But at some point, one of them has got to be a hit. CrossFire has the makings of a bombastic Bay-esque extravaganza, so maybe this is the one to finally break through. Perhaps with all this talk about Bay, Sony should just hire him to direct?
Moritz seems to have his finger on the pulse when it comes to producing movies based on comic books and video games. He’s got the Vin Diesel-led Bloodshot coming up, and his next film is another video game adaptation, Sonic The Hedgehog, which hits cinemas later this week. Perhaps a good box office performance from that film makes Sony feel a lot better about CrossFire.
