Taika Waititi is fresh off an Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay and already has multiple film projects in the works, including sports drama Next Goal Wins and Thor: Love & Thunder. So why not dabble in some TV as well? On top of his small screen version of What We Do In The Shadows, Waititi is now in talks with Showtime for a showbiz-based series titled The Auteur.
In talks with him is Jude Law. Little is known about the show, although sources describe it as a Hollywood satire that seeks to examine the industry through the eyes of an eccentric auteur filmmaker, who would be played by Law. Waititi would executive produce the show and direct at least one episode, as well as co-write the series alongside Peter Warren.
Negotiations are currently taking place. It makes sense that Showtime would target some big names such as Waititi and Law, as some of their established shows are coming to an end. Both Homeland and Shameless are concluding this year, and Ray Donovan has been cancelled.
Thus the network is focusing on its next generation of television, which includes Halo, Mr. Ripley, an adaptation of James Patterson and Bill Clinton‘s book The President Is Missing, and now potentially The Auteur. Content is key in this era of TV, so Showtime need other shows to step up in order for the network to stay relevant and competitive.
Waititi is a fan favourite so anything involving him, even on just a writing capacity, would likely draw some eyeballs. Law remains a consummate pro who has established himself more as a limited series actor in recent years.
He starred in The Young Pope and in its follow up The New Pope, plus he’s also slated to star alongside Naomie Harris in another HBO limited series, The Third Day.
Expect Waititi and Law to both sign on for The Auteur. When their involvement is official, we’ll likely hear more specifics regarding the show.
