Rachel Brosnahan, the Emmy-winning star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, is set to join Anthony Ramos in Amblin’s sci-fi comedy Distant.
The film will be directed by Will Speck and Josh Gordon (Blades Of Glory, Office Christmas Party) from a script by Spenser Cohen.
Distant will revolve around an asteroid miner who crash-lands on an alien planet and must contend with the challenges of his new surroundings, all while making his way across the harsh terrain to the only other survivor — a woman trapped in her escape pod.
It’s an interesting premise for a comedy, and might have to rely on the chemistry and charm of its stars. Securing Brosnahan should help with that, as she’s won two of the last three Emmy Awards for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. She’s already a star on the smaller screen, and this could be her first step into movie stardom if Distant works.
Brosnahan will also soon be seen in Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz‘s new drama I’m Your Woman, which centres around a mother who’s forced to go on the run with her child due to her husband’s crimes. She will also star alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in spy movie Ironbark, which got a very healthy reception at Sundance last month.
Her Distant co-star Ramos is also an impressive up-and-comer, having had roles in Hamilton and A Star Is Born. He’s set to lead the feature adaptation of In The Heights, which arrives later this year and is expected to be a major awards contender.
Production on Distant will begin next month, which may mean it arrives sometime this year. If so, it will join Amblin’s 2020 slate which includes Tom McCarthy‘s Stillwater, starring Matt Damon, the Sigourney Weaver–Kevin Kline dramedy The Good House, and horror movie Larry starring Gillian Jacobs.
