J.J. Abrams‘ production company Bad Robot will produce a supernatural western titled The Pinkerton for Warner Bros.
Daniel Casey, who penned Bd Robot’s 10 Cloverfield Lane and currently has his subversive superhero screenplay The Heavy in production, will write the script. Abrams is reportedly eyeing Overlord director Julius Avery to helm the project.
So what’s the film about? Well, the Pinkertons were an organisation of for-hire detectives and private security agents founded in the mid-1800s, famously used by President Lincoln as bodyguards before the creation of the Secret Service.
The agency gained notoriety for their involvement in union-busting operations, most notably the Homestead strike against Andrew Carnegie in which 7 workers were killed.
Will the movie actually be about any of this? No one seems to know at this point. Warner Bros. will be praying this isn’t a repeat of 2011’s Cowboys & Aliens, the last major Hollywood film to attempt this sort of western-and-another-genre mashup. With Abrams’ production company in charge, expect the film to have a higher floor and a base level of competency, even if it doesn’t take many risks.
What else has Bad Robot been doing? The company recently co-produced Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker – you may have heard of it – and will produce director Matt Reeves‘ upcoming Batman reboot.
The company’s current television projects include Westworld, Castle Rock, and the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country from executive producer Jordan Peele.
