Edgar Wright To Direct ‘Stage 13’ For Amblin | Film News

Edgar Wright has another project in the works. The busy director already has psychological thriller Last Night In Soho completed and awaiting release.

He also signed on to helm an adaptation of Simon Stephenson‘s novel Set My Heart To Five, about a screenwriting robot who develops feelings, as well as an adaptation of Adrian McKinty‘s bestselling kidnapping book The Chain.

But that isn’t enough for the prolific, eclectic filmmaker. Wright has now signed on to directed a supernatural movie titled Stage 13 for Amblin.

An American Pickle writer Simon Rich will adapt his short story of the same name, which revolves around a ghost that has haunted the titular soundstage of a studio backlot for decades. When a struggling director meets the ghost, they find an unexpected kinship and team up to make their mark on the world.

Rich’s short story was originally featured in his collection Hits and Misses, which won the 2019 Thurber Prize for American Humor, so this might be a more comedic return to the Wright of the Cornetto trilogy, a departure from his recent foray into thrillers.

This sounds interesting, although Wright could sign on to direct a film about paint drying and it would probably get most people excited. He’s a talented director who has impressive visual flair and often takes his movies in directions you wouldn’t expect. And obviously right now he has a thing for ghosts and robots.

Rich is a five-time Emmy nominee who has written for Saturday Night Live and whose work frequently appears in the New Yorker.

The aforementioned An American Pickle, a bizarre-sounding comedy with duelling Seth Rogens, will hit HBO Max Thursday, August 6. Perhaps we’ll get a taste for what Stage 13 might be like tonally from that movie.

Wright’s Last Night In Soho was supposed to arrive this year but COVID-19 put a stop to that. The film will now arrive April 23, 2021. Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie star.
