The secretly-filmed Borat sequel that was finally revealed a few weeks ago has found a home. Reportedly, all the major streaming services were interested in the project – little surprise after the original film grossed $262 million worldwide – but Amazon have won out, and will release the film on Friday, October 23. Just in time for U.S. Election Day on Tuesday, November 3.
Sacha Baron Cohen shot the politically-minded sequel in secret during the pandemic once unions allowed the film’s minimal crew to return to work. It was filmed all over the world, including various parts of America, and reports mention Cohen’s in-character antics with real people led to him having to wear a bulletproof vest on two separate occasions.
Cohen has been politically outspoken, being awarded the International Leadership Award by the Anti-Defamation League for fighting bigotry and prejudice. The original Borat may mostly be remembered for its outrageous comedy and memorable one-liners, but it had a thread of political commentary running through it, and this follow-up looks to have a lot more.
If you’re skeptical, check the title. At least according to a WGA filing, this sequel will be fully titled Borat: Gift of Pornographic Monkey to Vice Premiere Mikhael Pence to Make Benefit Recently Diminished Nation of Kazakhstan.
Rarely do we get something like this: a secretly-filmed movie designed to be released right before an incredibly important election. So this will no doubt be a unique experience, and considering Cohen’s prior output, probably an equally unique film. Putting it on Amazon should allow for the largest number of people to watch it. Now we wait and see what happens, and if it makes a difference.
