In a normal year, we would have seen Cary Fukunaga‘s James Bond film, No Time To Die, all the way back in April. The discourse on it would have felt like old news by now. Instead, we’re still waiting for the film, which has now been delayed until April 2021. Fortunately for Fukunaga, he’s already lining up his post-007 project.
The director will reportedly helm a trio of episodes of Masters Of The Air, a World War II drama being set up for Apple TV+.
The series will be an adaptation of Donald L. Miller‘s book of the same name, and is being written by John Orloff and Graham Yost, who also penned HBO’s award-winning war series Band Of Brothers.
Apple’s heads would probably explode if this series found the same success as that one. But it might have to do some good numbers, as the show will reportedly cost well over $200 million to produce. It revolves around the young American and British bomber pilots who made some of the earliest offensive attacks in Germany during the war.
Of course, Fukunaga is no stranger to TV. He directed all eight episodes of the first season of True Detective, which got massive acclaim and has become the season the show has been unsuccessfully chasing ever since.
He also helmed the Emma Stone–Jonah Hill Netflix mini-series Maniac, which wasn’t as well received but was certainly visually impressive.
So yeah, he should be a great fit here. Apple really needs their nascent streaming service to get going, lest it go the way of another one of their experiments like Ping. Don’t remember that? Exactly.
They’ve invested in major names like Will Smith and Tom Hanks, and will be hoping that Fukunaga’s talent elevates this show to a prestige level where people feel like they must subscribe to check it out.
No Time To Die is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on April 2, 2021.
