We may not have yet seen A Quiet Place Part II thanks to COVID-19 – it was originally due out in March – but at some point the film’s universe will be expanding. Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter, Mud) has been hired to helm a Quiet Place spinoff. John Krasinski, who wrote, directed and starred in the original film, will produce.
The first film focused on a family trying to survive in a world where the majority of humanity has been wiped out by aliens who can track their prey through sound. Unfortunately, we know nothing about the plot to this spinoff, except that it will be based on another of Krasinski’s ideas, and that Nichols will also pen the script.
Nichols is a good director, adept at using impossible scenarios to explore human dynamics. He should be a good fit here. But Krasinksi’s involvement in the spinoff is a big plus, as he’s the driving force of what’s becoming a burgeoning franchise.
He’s already been frequently asked about the possibility of A Quiet Place Part III, and with this spinoff, it looks like this could become a franchise â la Cloverfield, exploring the same sci-fi world from different perspectives. However, the Cloverfield films seem to have worn out their welcome with audiences after only three movies. We’ll see if the Quiet Place franchise can fare better.
Krasinski will be producing under his Sunday Night banner, while Michael Bay, Andrew Form, and Brad Fuller will produce via Platinum Dunes. Paramount Pictures has already set a 2022 release date for the spinoff. A Quiet Place Part II is now due out April 23, 2021.
