American singer/songwriter KIRBY has just unveiled her latest single “Superpower”, featuring upcoming rapper D Smoke. The track combines R&B, soul and pop, and is a powerful anthem aimed at empowering the Black community.
If you don’t know KIRBY, you’re probably already familiar with her work as a songwriter, as she’s the incredibly talented writer behind “FourFiveSeconds” by Rihanna, Kanye West and Paul McCartney, “Tell Me You Love Me” by Demi Lovato, “Die With You” by Beyoncé, “Only One” by Kanye West and Paul McCartney, “Break Your Heart Right Back” by Ariana Grande, among many others.
Speaking about what “Superpower” is about, KIRBY explains the message of the track: “This song is for the melaninated superheros who walk this earth. Your skin is not your burden, your skin is not your curse, your skin is not your choice, BUT it is your superpower.”
The singer/songwriter released her debut EP Sis. on January 31, a seven-track piece produced by Homer Steinweiss and The Menahan Street Band of Amy Winehouse’s famous album Back to Black. This project has been met with widespread acclaim, and has earned the singer a spot on NPR’s Tiny Desk.
