Jada Pinkett Smith has signed on to star in Redd Zone, an upcoming drama for Netflix.
The film is based on the true story of Tia Magee, a single mother who helps her sons and their high school football teammates, ‘The Bros’, heal after the murder of their best friend, Dominic Redd. One by one, the boys start moving into her house, and soon, 17 of them are living under her roof.
Her tutelage leads to all of them going to college, with four of them making it to the NFL. Magee’s son, Brandon Magee, became a linebacker for the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and was later also drafted by the Boston Red Sox.
The film will be dedicated to Redd’s memory. Pinkett Smith will also produce with Westbrook Studios, which are also behind the in-development thriller Emancipation, which recently sold to Apple, and the upcoming remake of Planes, Trains & Automobiles, both of which will star Pinkett Smith’s husband Will Smith.
Pinkett Smith has become a champion of minority filmmakers, serving as executive producer for Hala, directed by Minhal Baig, which Apple also picked up as their first deal in Sundance 2019, as well as Sprinter, an award-winning Jamaican film helmed by Storm Saulter, and Angel Manuel Soto‘s Charm City Kings, which is currently streaming on HBO Max.
Redd Zone sounds like it has the chance to be an incredibly inspiring and uplifting story about overcoming trauma through the kindness of others. It’s easy to see why the story would find new relevance now.
Pinkett Smith is currently in production on The Matrix 4, and is executive producing the upcoming biopic King Richard, which revolves around Serena and Venus Williams‘ relationship with their father.
