Netflix has purchased the worldwide rights to Gal Gadot‘s espionage thriller Heart Of Stone. The project had been developed at Skydance Media, and marks the second major movie the company has offloaded in a week after Amazon emerged as the frontrunner to acquire sci-fi blockbuster The Tomorrow War for around $200 million.
However, unlike The Tomorrow War, Heart Of Stone has not yet been shot and remains in early stages of production. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but we do know that Tom Harper (Wild Rose, The Aeronauts) will direct what’s being described as an “international action epic” by Variety from a screenplay by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder.
Obviously Gadot’s presence is a huge part of the project. She’s fresh off Wonder Woman 1984 and just finished shooting another Netflix project: heist movie Red Notice alongside Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson. That’s another movie that shifted companies, having originally been in the works at Universal before the streaming giant purchased the rights in 2019.
As mentioned, Skydance has been a pretty active seller during the pandemic. In addition to the aforementioned movies, the company also sold off upcoming animated features Luck and Spellbound to Apple. Streaming companies have been a godsend for major studios during a time when traditional theatrical releases have all but dried up.
Heart Of Stone will be the fourth film Skydance and Netflix have partnered up for, having also done business on the Charlize Theron thriller The Old Guard, Michael Bay‘s 6 Underground and the upcoming film The Adam Project, which also stars Reynolds.
We’ll wait for more concrete news regarding what Heart Of Stone is actually about, but it sounds like another action thriller that Netflix will be hoping breaks viewing records like Extraction and The Old Guard did (at least according to Netflix themselves). Both of those have sequels in early development, and the streaming giant will be hoping for a similar outcome here.
