Palmer, the new film in which Justin Timberlake plays a former college football star, now an ex-convict, who starts to mentor a young boy, was just released on Apple TV+ and became the streamer’s most viewed film in its debut weekend. The film’s writer, Cheryl Guerriero, has quickly been given a chance to pen another feature.
Guerriero is writing I Have Something To Tell You for Monarch Media, a coming out film inspired by Guerriero’s own experience.
In 2003, with a video camera hidden in her family’s kitchen, Guerriero, with the help of her sister, came out to her conservative and religious parents. She went on to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show with her mother to help educate the audience on how difficult the coming-out process can be.
Monarch principals Alan Powell and Steve Barnett will produce the film, and Guerriero and Monarch principal Vicky Patel will executive produce.
“When I learned that Alan and Steve were interested in turning a part of my life into a movie, I was truly honored. I’m a fan of their work and respect them as people, which is always important to me, especially with a story that is so personal”, Guerriero said.
“This is a story of unconditional love between a parent and a child and coming to understand things that you may have initially struggled with, and that hopefully love conquers all. At least it did in my family. I’m super excited to be working side-by-side to bring I Have Something To Tell You to the screen”.
Guerriero’s Palmer script originally appeared on the Black List of best unproduced Hollywood screenplays back in 2016, and she’s also the author of novel Girl On Point. The true story behind I Have Something To Tell You is a fascinating one, and it will be cool to see Guerriero get the chance to adapt her real-life experience for the silver screen.
Monarch Media also have a number of intriguing projects in the works, including Chris Pratt‘s coming-of-age tale The Black Belt, military thriller Havoc, and Do The Birds Still Sing In Hell?, a musical based on the WWII biography of a British soldier who was a prisoner of war in Nazi Germany.
