South Korean k-pop group BTS have been crowned the 2020 IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year Award.
The group is in first place ahead of American singer and songwriter Taylor Swift who was last year’s winner, with Canadian rapper Canadian Drake landing in 3rd position – he has been in the top 3 for the last 5 years.
BTS makes history because it is the first year they have won this award and they are also the very first Korean group to win this award.
Despite the pandemic that has greatly affected the music sector, the Korean group broke records in 2020, with their album Map Of The Soul ranking number 1 in more than 20 countries.
IFPI CEO Frances Moore commented on their win by saying, “BTS are a global phenomenon. They have had another outstanding year, releasing three albums, and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world. They truly show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people the world over”.
The unique IFPI Global Recording Award is calculated based on the global performance of digital and physical music formats over the course of the year for each artist.
