Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones are set to star in the latest prestige miniseries for FX. They’re on board for Under The Banner Of Heaven, an adaptation of the New York Times bestselling nonfiction book by Jon Krakauer.
Dustin Lance Black will serve as the showrunner, with David Mackenzie (Hell Or High Water) directing the miniseries.
The miniseries will follow a devout Mormon detective whose faith begins to crack after investigating the death of a young practitioner and discovering dark secrets within the community. Krakauer’s book is acclaimed for its examination of the LDS Church and the murder committed in the name of God by fundamentalist brothers.
An adaptation of Krakauer’s book has been in the works since 2011. Warner Bros. originally purchased the rights for a film adaptation, with Ron Howard slated to direct and Black hired to pen the screenplay. But that version of the project fell through, and news had been quiet until this announcement.
Black’s role has now shifted to showrunner, and the adaptation moving from film to TV shows how the industry has changed since the rights to the book were initially purchased in 2011. Howard’s Imagine Entertainment will produce the series.
The project is deeply personal to Black. He said in a statement: “After so many years of work, I’m incredibly grateful to Imagine and FX for their patience with and commitment to bringing this story to screen. Raised in the LDS faith, my hope is that this true-crime thriller might shed light on the horrific brutalities perpetrated in the name of God in our own backyards”.
FX Original Programming Director Gina Balian added:
“Dustin Lance Black is a gifted storyteller and the perfect artist to adapt Jon Krakauer‘s gripping novel for FX.
Lance joins an incredible creative team led by Brian Grazer and Ron Howard at Imagine Television who have been passionate about telling this story with him for years. We are thrilled that David Mackenzie has come aboard as a director and to have Andrew Garfield and Daisy Edgar-Jones star”.
Under The Banner Of Heaven will premiere exclusively on Hulu as part of FX’s slate of FX on Hulu programming. The show has an enticing set of ingredients that should draw plenty of viewers in. A release date has not yet been announced.
