Henry Cavill has signed on to star in Sony’s romantic comedy The Rosie Project. Stephen Falk will direct from a script penned by (500) Days Of Summer screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber.
Cavill will play an unlucky-in-love university professor who creates an elaborate questionnaire in an effort to find a wife. When he meets an unconventional woman who doesn’t match any of his specific requirements, he’s surprised to discover that she just might be the perfect woman for him.
This project has been sitting in development for a while. It was once being developed as a star vehicle for Jennifer Lawrence, before the script was gender-flipped and Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal each considered starring. The project has now made its way to Cavill, who is fresh off starring in The Witcher for Netflix.
The romantic comedy seems to be in the early stages of a mini-revival. The genre, once a multiplex mainstay, has been relegated to streaming over the last decade, but a number of in-development projects hint at studios wanting to get back in the game.
George Clooney and Julia Roberts have signed on to star in Ticket To Paradise, Channing Tatum and Sandra Bullock are on board adventure romcom The Lost City Of D, while Billy Eichner is developing the first gay romantic comedy by a major studio, Bros.
Obviously these movies have to be well-liked and commercially successful for the star-studded romantic comedy to be “back”, but it’s a good sign that studios are getting big names on board for theatrically released romcoms. Hopefully The Rosie Project can play a part in this mini-revival.
Cavill’s schedule is jam-packed. He’ll soon be filming season 2 of The Witcher, as well as the Enola Holmes sequel. But he’s also on board Matthew Vaughn‘s spy thriller Argylle, and attached to star in the Highlander reboot for Lionsgate.
The Rosie Project is expected to begin production early next year. Fingers crossed that Cavill dons his Mission: Impossible – Fallout moustache once again.
