Aubrey Plaza has signed on to produce and star in Emily The Criminal, which is being developed by Low Spark Films. The movie will tell the story of Emily, down on her luck and saddled with debt, who gets involved in a credit card scam that pulls her into the criminal underworld of Los Angeles, ultimately leading to deadly consequences.
John Patton Ford is writing and directing. Gina Gershon and Megalyn Echikunwoke have also been cast in supporting roles, while Plaza will produce alongside Tyler Davidson and Drew Sykes. Low Spark is fully financing the film.
Plaza has most certainly stepped out of the shadow of her career-making Parks & Recreation role, with her towering performance in last year’s Black Bear worthy of an Oscar nomination – and maybe even win – if the Academy paid any real attention to independent film.
She was also seen in holiday romcom Happiest Season last year, and has comedy-drama Best Sellers and Guy Ritchie‘s spy film Five Eyes due soon. She’s also signed on to lend her voice to animated comedy The Ark And The Aardvark, and will lead Hulu’s drama series Olga Dies Dreaming.
After Black Bear, Plaza should be able to pull off any role asked of her. Emily The Criminal sounds like it could be an interesting look at the LA criminal underworld from a fresh perspective. Hopefully it’s another film Plaza can add to her increasingly long list of fascinating indies.
