The second single of the year from East London collective GRAMN is titled “Norman Bates”, which follows their previous release “Glow Up” that has been supported by Apple Music, Complex, Spotify, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, among others.
Speaking about “Norman Bates”, GRAMN lead singer Aux says, “The people you love the most can sometimes make you crazy. And not the fun, romantic crazy, I mean the real crazy, the kind of crazy that makes the lines between Love and Hate really blurry“.
The song’s structure reflects this duality of love and hate, switching up sonically and vocally halfway through. Aux continues the change by rapping instead of singing. Whether you like it or not, this is vintage GRAMN. According to the group, “Norman Bates” will remind you of Tierra Whack featuring on a SZA track that was produced by James Blake.
Led by singer, songwriter and storyteller Aux, GRAMN is also made up of boundary-pushing producers and multi-instrumentalists James Lowe and Johnny Tomlinson. They are inspired by the likes of Lauryn Hill, Kendrick Lamar and The Last Artful, Dodgr, among others, with a sound that covers the spectrum of hip-hop, R&B, jazz and neo-soul, to make for body-winding listening experience.
