Sam Richardson has landed the lead role in Universal’s action-comedy Stranded Asset, a film he has co-written alongside Jen D’Angelo. Both Richardson and D’Angelo worked on Amazon blockbuster The Tomorrow War earlier this year, and the star of that film, Chris Pratt, is producing Stranded Asset.
Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the film’s title is borrowed from a financial term for resources suffering unanticipated losses, so it’s possible the film has something to do with money, or maybe the studio just thought Stranded Asset sounded like a cool title for an action film.
Pratt will produce the film via his Invisible Productions banner as part of a first-look deal the studio has with Universal Pictures. Richardson was arguably the breakout star of The Tomorrow War in a comedic supporting role, so it makes sense that Pratt and Universal would see his potential at leading his own action-comedy.
Alongside The Tomorrow War, Richardson also recently starred in Werewolves Within and HBO Max’s Superintelligence, while he may be best known for his role on Veep, which won him a Screen Actor’s Guild Award.
He will also be seen in The Afterparty, the upcoming comedy mystery series for Apple TV+ being created by Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
D’Angelo has written the upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel, and also recently sold an untitled sisters comedy to Netflix that will star Awkwafina and Sandra Oh. She has also produced series like Workaholics and Hulu’s Solar Opposites.
Stranded Asset is Pratt’s second project under his Invisible Productions banner, with the other being Saigon Bodyguards, an actioner that he will star in alongside Wu Jing. Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame) are directing.
