Steve Carell has signed on to star in limited series The Patient, which is in development at FX.
Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields, showrunners for FX’s acclaimed drama The Americans, have created the series, which revolves around Alexander Strauss, a psychotherapist and recent widower who is being held prisoner by a serial killer who wants him to cure him of his homicidal desires. As Strauss tries to help, he starts to deal with his own troubles while being held captive.
The show will consist of ten half-hour episodes, with Carell also producing. Eric Schrier, president of FX Entertainment, said in a statement:
“We are excited that Joe and Joel are back with their next series for FX after the great experience of working with them on six amazing seasons of The Americans. Their creative instincts and mastery of plot and character are on display again with The Patient, which will showcase Steve Carell‘s remarkable talents as an actor, producer and creative collaborator.”
While this might not be a return to TV in the form of an Office reboot many fans want, seeing Carell in a psychological thriller like this will be exciting. He’s been nominated for 11 Emmys, an Oscar and a BAFTA, and won 3 SAGs and a Golden Globe, but many of those were for comedy or comedy-adjacent roles. It will be fascinating to see him in something tense like this.
There is no release date for The Patient yet, but considering Carell’s star power and Weisberg and Fields’ previous success with The Americans, FX will want this into production as soon as possible.
Carell is currently starring in season two of The Morning Show on Apple TV+, while a second season of his Netflix comedy Space Force is scheduled to arrive next year.
