Christopher Nolan‘s Oppenheimer is set to add another big name to its cast. Having already secured Cillian Murphy for the lead, Deadline now reports that Emily Blunt is in talks to join the film.
If all works out, Blunt will play Katherine Vissering Oppenheimer, the wife of Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer, the lead scientist of the Manhattan Project which brought the atomic bomb into the world. It would also reunite Blunt and Murphy, who appeared together earlier this year in A Quiet Place Part II.
Nolan is writing the screenplay himself, and the film is being described as “an IMAX-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.”
This will be his first film away from Warner Bros. after disapproving of their distribution methods during the pandemic. Oppenheimer will be released by Universal. Despite the studio change, don’t be surprised if the film casts a bunch of other big names, as actors will happily line up around the block to appear in a Nolan film.
Blunt recently starred in A Quiet Place Part II and Jungle Cruise, both of which were successful, with Disney already confirmed a Jungle Cruise follow-up. The only other project she currently has in development is a western series titled The English, in which she will produce and star for both BBC One and Amazon Prime Video.
Oppenheimer is scheduled to begin production in early 2022, and Universal have now confirmed a July 21, 2023 release date.
