Rooney Mara has signed on to play screen legend Audrey Hepburn in a biopic for Apple that will be directed by Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria). Mara will also produce while Michael Mitnick (The Giver) will pen the script.
Plot details are currently under wraps, but the film is expected to chronicle the life of Hepburn, who was celebrated for her performances in films such as Breakfast At Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady, Roman Holiday, Charade, and more.
During her four-decade career, Hepburn achieved EGOT status – winning Emmy, Oscar, Tony and Grammy awards, the last of which she received posthumously – and was also known as a dedicated humanitarian, working with UNICEF to help children in Africa, South America and Asia, and receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.
Mara was recently seen in Guillermo Del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley, which was actually her first film in three years, but she remains one of her generation’s best actors and already has two Oscar nominations under her belt. Her resemblance to Hepburn is striking and she no doubt has the acting chops to pull this role off and potentially earn a third Oscar nom (or maybe first win).
She recently signed on to star in Women Talking, Sarah Polley‘s adaptation of Miriam Towes‘ novel of the same name.
Guadagnino last directed his Suspiria reimagining in 2018, and is currently working on horror-romance Bones & All, an adaptation of Camille DeAngelis‘ novel which will star Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell.
This is the latest big-name project for Apple, who are also wrapping up the rights to the Brad Pitt–Joseph Kosinski project about a Formula One racer coming out of retirement. The streamer has focused almost exclusively on film projects with marketable names, and this is another one as they likely seek awards recognition to keep them somewhat in stride with Netflix.
Expect more details regarding the Hepburn biopic to emerge soon, such as a title and what period of her life will be covered.
