Apple TV+ has given a series order to Government Cheese, a dramedy series that’s being created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, who previously wrote for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. David Oyelowo has signed on to star, while he will also executive produce through his company Yoruba Saxon.
The series is based on an original short film by Hunter, and will revolve around Hampton Chambers, who tries to reconnect with his family after being released from prison. During his attempt to win his family back, Chambers also must process frequent moments of divine intervention which are continuing to increase.
Hunter is set to direct the series and will co-write alongside Carr. The series will be co-produced by both Apple Studios and MACRO Television Studios.
Oyelowo is probably best known for portraying Martin Luther King Jr. in Ava DuVernay‘s Selma, but he’s also appeared in films such as A Most Violent Year, The Cloverfield Paradox, and Gringo.
His upcoming slate of films include Nate Parker‘s drama Solitary and mystery film See How They Run, which also features Saoirse Ronan, Sam Rockwell, Adrien Brody, and Ruth Wilson. Government Cheese will mark Oyelowo’s second collaboration with Apple, as he was also recently cast in Wool, a sci-fi series based on the novels by Hugh Howey.
There’s currently no release date for Government Cheese.
