Sarah Gadon (True Detective) is set to make her feature directorial debut. She will helm Lullabies for Little Criminals, an adaptation of Heather O’Neill‘s award-winning 2006 novel of the same name.
The book follows a thirteen-year-old girl named Baby living in Montreal. She lives with her father, who suffers from heroin addiction, and the novel follows Baby through her troubled young life as she catches the attention of a charismatic but dangerous local man and experiences the trials of living in the city’s underside.
Gadon will also adapt the novel into a screenplay herself. Though her writing career is not robust, she was named this year’s TIFF Micki Moore Writer in Residency. The residency was established by the film festival to support women who are outstanding Canadian feature-film screenwriters, and gives them the chance to develop their screenplays under mentorship.
Gadon is probably best known for her onscreen roles in the aforementioned True Detective, 11.22.63, Alias Grace, Maps To The Stars, and Enemy.
Her newest film North of Normal just premiered at TIFF to great reviews, and she’s also working on Michael Mann‘s upcoming Ferrari alongside Adam Driver.
Gadon will also produce Lullabies for Little Criminals alongside Shawn Williamson and Emily Alden for Brightlight Pictures. There’s currently no word on when production is expected to begin.
