Hot off successful crime series Black Bird, Taron Egerton and Apple are eager to work together again. Egerton has already signed on to star in Firebug, a drama series for Apple TV+ that will see him reunite with Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane, who is also developing this series.
Little is known about the show right now except that it will follow Egerton’s character, who will work with a detective to find two serial arsonists. Although the show will be a fictional series, it will be inspired by some of the events featured in the true crime podcast of the same name hosted by Kary Antholis, who will also executive produce here.
Black Bird was a critical hit, and Lehane has also worked on other good shows such as The Outsider and Mr. Mercedes, in addition to being the writer of novels such as Shutter Island, Mystic River, and Gone Baby Gone, which went on to be adapted into successful films. So he’s got a very good track record. Egerton said of Lehane’s involvement:
“With somebody like Dennis, who is in the big leagues, it’s just like if acting’s turning up to a fight, it’s like being given all the best weapons, you’ve got these incredible tools […] Dennis’ writing is in no way fatty, and it’s so active as well. It’s language being used rather than just describing. I loved working with him.”
There aren’t any further details regarding Firebug right now, but it makes total sense that Apple are bringing back those who made Black Bird so good for another crime-related series. Hopefully Firebug can be just as compelling.
Egerton’s relationship with Apple only grows stronger, as he’s currently in post-production on Tetris, a true story of the high-stakes legal battle to secure the intellectual property rights to the video game of the same name, which will premiere on Apple TV+ in 2023.
