Last weekend, the Utah Jazz hosted the 2023 NBA All-Star Weekend at Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah. This historic occasion took place for the 72nd time this weekend.
The night’s All-Star Game featured the top players in the league from the Eastern and Western conferences, with LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers and Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks serving as the game’s captains.
The All-Star Weekend serves as both the biggest stage for the top basketball players to display their talents and the biggest stage for the best fashion ensembles. As they observe the events throughout the course of the weekend, players are frequently sighted dressed to the nines.
The All-Star Game has always been a big deal in the sneaker industry, because players use it as an opportunity to debut new footwear. No exceptions applied to the 2023 edition. The message was surprisingly quite political.
It was perhaps Kyrie Irving and Jaylen Brown‘s pairs that stood out, with models bearing messages directed at Nike, along with the hottest future models like the JT1.
Kyrie Irving, who was recently dismissed by Nike for his extra-sporting activities, debuted a unique model with a variety of colours. He then covered the Nike emblem on his Kyrie 8s in the second half in a homage to his mother’s Native American heritage.
Jaylen Brown went a step further and sported a brand new Kobe 5 with a burning cross through the Nike logo and the words “Liberation” on it. The slogan “Just Do It” is replaced by “Just do Better”. A message from the Celtics player, vice-president of the players’ union, who had already questioned the ethics of the brand with the comma at the beginning of the season.
