Kristen Stewart, Josh O’Connor, and Elle Fanning are all on board to lead a new film titled Rosebushpruning, which will be directed by Karim Aïnouz (Firebrand). The Match Factory and Mubi will produce the project.
The film will be an adaptation of Marco Bellochio‘s psychological drama from 50 years ago, Fists in the Pocket. Aïnouz will direct from a script written by Efthimis Filippou (Dogtooth).
The film is being described as a dark satire of family and social values, revolving around a young man suffering from epilepsy who plots the murders of his dysfunctional family.
Aïnouz said in a statement: “Marco Bellocchio‘s astonishing debut, Fists in the Pocket, was released over 50 years ago and had a huge impact on Italian cinema and storytelling at the time.
I’m excited to be collaborating with Efthimis Filippou to revisit this iconic work to create a contemporary parable about the death of the traditional patriarchal family — which I hope will be touching and provocative in equal measure.”
Aïnouz won the Cannes 2019 Un Certain Regard with The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão, and is back at this year’s festival with Firebrand, a historical drama starring Alicia Vikander that focuses on Catherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII. Jude Law, Sam Riley, and Eddie Marsan also feature.
Fists in the Pocket, after initially being seen as controversial, has gone on to become a landmark work of Italian cinema. So it will be fascinating to see how the story works in the modern era. Shooting on Rosebushpruning is expected to take place in 2024.
