Malaysian alt-pop artist Reshma is making waves with her latest single and music video, “Where My Asians At?”. Born in Klang, Malaysia, and now residing in Auckland, New Zealand, Reshma has grown her reputation for creating dynamic music that challenges norms and expectations.
In “Where My Asians At?”, Reshma turns the spotlight onto the underrepresentation of marginalized communities in commercial music and arts scenes. The single carries a powerful message, tackling not just the lack of representation but also prejudices she has encountered within her community.
“It’s still important to ask questions and spark discussions about representation, what community means for those who come from different backgrounds, and how to bridge that gap to connect with everyone equally,” Reshma says.
The song is a reflection of her experiences in the music industry, her search for community, and her courage to challenge misguided stereotypes based on appearance.
The music video, directed by Auckland-based writer-director Jolin Lee, reflects the song’s audacious spirit. It features vibrant choreography by renowned K-Pop dancer and choreographer, Rina Chae. The video was supported by Auckland City of Music, Boosted, and the POC community, contributing both in front and behind the camera.
For Reshma, “Where My Asians At?” is “a fun, upbeat, feminine rage song, perfect for a gym session or walking into a job interview thinking yeah, I got this!” While the song carries a strong message for Asian representation, Reshma hopes that it inspires discussions about representation and inclusion for all communities.
Reshma’s journey in music has seen her gaining popularity since her appearance on Akademi Fantasia, a popular Malaysian music reality show, in 2016. Following her rise to fame, Reshma relocated to New Zealand to introduce herself to an English-speaking audience.
Drawing inspiration from artists like Kimbra, Thabani Gapara, No Frills Twins, and Marina and The Diamonds, Reshma’s music style stands out for its unique fusion of diverse musical influences.
Known for her code-switching, the artist has collaborated with artists like Sasi the Don, Lauren Gin, An Honest Mistake, and Mazbou Q, and has even toured Japan.
The single “Where My Asians At?” marks the beginning of her upcoming project set to release on June 16, 2023. The catchy tune, paired with a music video, showcases Reshma’s talent for writing hook-filled tunes that spark important conversations.
It’s not just a song; it’s a bold statement reflecting RESHMA’s journey and her desire to connect with people across various cultural backgrounds.
