It’s hard to envision Chris Brown without thinking of the abuse that then-girlfriend Rihanna suffered at his hands. It happened in 2009, but something that serious can stick to a person, like gum on a heel, for years to come. Brown was due to play four dates down under but Australian immigration officer Peter Dutton has issued him with a ‘Notice of Intention to Consider Refusal’.
A petition created by Australian campaigning community GetUp! echoes this sentiment: “If we stand by and do nothing while he performs around the country (even if we don’t have the faintest interest in Brown’s career or pop music in general) we are implicitly sending the message that if you brutally beat a woman, in a short amount of time you will be forgiven, or even celebrated”. Furthermore, according to Australia’s Migration Act, a visa can be revoked if someone has a substantial criminal record. Brown has 28 days to appeal, so nothing is set in stone yet.
