Not everyone likes contemporary dance music, and fans should not expect everyone to lend a favourable ear. Musician Steve Albini is one of those critics, and now London commuters know about it thanks to a huge billboard on Commercial Street in East London. Oscar Powell asked whether a sample of Albini’s voice could be used for a song (“Insomniac”), and the reply is what has been turned into a billboard, with Alibini’s consent.
“Sounds like you’ve got a cool thing set up for yourself”, begins the email before Albini adds further down: “I detest club culture as deeply as I detest anything on earth. So I am against what you’re into, and an enemy of where you come from but I have no problem with what you’re doing.” Well, at least Powell got permission!
