HBO have yet again drummed up a slick, cinematic drama with high production values and high profile names attached. Vinyl is set to air a season of 10 episodes, beginning in January 2016. It is executive produced by Martin Scorsese, Mick Jagger, and Terence Winter, who will also take the role of showrunner. All three have collaborated on projects before; Scorsese directed The Rolling Stones concert film Shine a Light, and Winter wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street as well as creating the similarly Scorsese-produced HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
The series will take a look at the frenetic, drug-fuelled scene of the music business during the 1970’s. Bobby Cannavale plays Richie Finestra, the president of a rock n’ roll music label, who is struggling to keep control of his company at the dawn of punk, hip-hop, and disco. The character looks to follow the pattern of the troubled middle-aged male, such as Tony Soprano and Walter White, who often front gritty drama series such as this.
Scorsese is clearly in his comfort zone with the material, visiting the 70’s period several times throughout his work as well as continuously focusing on aggressively violent, unstable men. He has also examined the rise and fall of a debauched lifestyle before with Goodfellas, Raging Bull and The Wolf of Wall Street. The supporting cast includes Olivie Wilde, Juno Temple, and Ray Romano
