It is the season of the awards ceremonies. The Golden Globes have been and gone; the Oscars are just over the hill and it seems like everyone is winning an award for something or another right now. On the night of January 30, the Screen Actors Guild Awards took place in Los Angeles.
Although they don’t have the reputation of the Oscars, the BAFTAs or the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards are nonetheless very important because many people believe that once the Golden Globes have been and gone, it is pretty obvious who will win big at the Oscars; the coveted jewels in the cinematic crown.
Although they can be pretty good indicators, the Golden Globes are just that; and if you were looking to make a bet on who would win, you would do well to pay attention to the winners of the SAG, Directors Guild and Producers Guild Awards. For example: a film that has not been nominated for the SAG Best Ensemble Award has not gone on to win the Best Picture Oscar in 20 years, the last film to do so being Mel Gibson’s Braveheart. So, if your money was on The Revenant to take ‘Best Picture’, from a purely odds-based perspective you would have lost your money.
On a different note, the SAG Awards did hold a nice surprise for Leonardo DiCaprio, who won the ‘Best Actor’ Award for the first time (which significantly boosts his chances for an Oscar this year according to Oscar Science), and for Alicia Vikander, who after suffering disappointment at the Golden Globes has won the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ SAG Award. Enough rambling on my part, take a look at the winners for film and television yourself below.
