A24 Developing ‘The Governesses’ With Lily-Rose Depp, Hoyeon & Renate Reinsve

A24 have announced that their latest cinematic project will come from director Joe Talbot (The Last Black Man In San Francisco) and will be titled The Governesses.

And the studio has already announced an impressive cast for the film: Lily-Rose Depp, Squid Game star Hoyeon, and breakout star from The Worst Person In The World, Renate Reinsve.

The movie reportedly follows a trio of rebellious governesses who push the boundaries of the house they work in. The governesses inspirit the boys in their care, provoke the imagination of the Bohemian couple that employs them, and give up their duties for erotic adventures.

The film will be based on the novel of the same name by French author Anne Serre. Talbot will also write the screenplay alongside Olivia Gatwood, a poet and novelist best known for her collection of feminist poems The Life Of The Party. This will be her first film credit.

Talbot’s The Last Black Man In San Francisco was one of the best-reviewed movies of 2019, and a beautiful and fascinating look at gentrification and the idea of home. Fans have been patiently waiting for an announcement on his follow-up project. The Governesses sounds like it will be something completely different, but hopefully just as interesting.

Depp is best known for her appearances in Kevin Smith movies Tusk and Yoga Hosers. She was last seen in sci-fi film Voyagers, and is currently shooting HBO series The Idol, which is being developed by Sam Levinson and The Weeknd.

Hoyeon is a South Korean model turned actress whose acting career took off with Netflix’s sensation Squid Game. She has also worked with The Weeknd – recently featuring in the music video for ‘Out Of Time’ – and is currently attached to appear in Disclaimer, a new series from Alfonso Cuaron.

Reinsve gained acclaim for her starring role in Joachim Trier‘s drama The Worst Person In The World, which won her the Cannes Best Actress Award and also garnered her a BAFTA Best Actress nomination.

A24’s recent films include Kogonada‘s tranquil sci-fi drama After Yang, Ti West‘s horror film X, and acclaimed sci-fi black comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once from directing duo Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert. Upcoming A24 films include Alex Garland‘s Men, live-action/animated hybrid Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, and slasher film Bodies Bodies Bodies.
