The migration from big time Hollywood directors and actors to TV continues. Having completed his most recent film, Roma, which is set to hit cinemas next year, the Gravity and Children Of Men director Alfonso Cuaron has decided to team up with reigning Best Actor Oscar winner Casey Affleck for a secretive horror project.
All we know is that the project is a horror drama series that tracks the origins of a cult, with specifics totally under wraps. We do know that Cuaron is writing, directing and executively producing the as yet untitled series, with Affleck starring and also producing.
Reportedly, the project is currently being pitched to all the major outlets and networks, both TV and streaming, and you can imagine there’s naturally huge interest.
With Amazon having just dropped their prestige David O. Russell series in an effort to cut ties with The Weinstein Company, and with Game Of Thrones currently shooting its final season for HBO, plus Netflix having bundles of cash to throw around, it’s possible a bidding war could break out to secure the tantalising, mysterious series from one of the best contemporary directors working today.
It’s unclear when the project would head into development when it finally finds a home, as Affleck recently signed on to lead the Blumhouse indie film Stoner, which has Joe Wright directing, while Cuaron probably has post-production and press commitments for Roma sometime next year.
What we do know, is that scheduling issues won’t be much of a problem considering the amount of money whichever network or streaming service secures the project throws at it, and Cuaron and co. will likely have all the time and creative leeway in the world to create something great. Although there aren’t many details available, this instantly becomes one of the most anticipated shows being developed.
