London-based R&B artist Alicai Harley has just released her latest homage to the Noughties and her first song for 2020 titled “I Just Wanna Know”. The project follows recent collaborations with Afro-Dancehall talent Stonebwoy, dance music legend DJ Zinc and producer Jim Ouma and comes with must-see visuals.
Alicai had her first breakthrough with her summer single “Gold” which was supported by big tastemakers, including Seani B, DJ Target and Sian Anderson. Her latest project is a return to her roots with smooth transitions between singing and rapping.
“This song reminds me of my younger self… back when I was rapping. That’s what I wanted to bring back. And it’s touching on real subjects, on a real relationship. I wanted this to feel like my own version of 50 Cent’s ‘21 Questions’”, she says about the single.
With “I Just Wanna Know” she brings a new energy across but also refers to classic R&B tunes from the past. Actually the song is a sample of the classic hit “Leaving (Always On Time Part II)” by Ashanti and it honours the iconic era of the 00s.
The accompanied visuals to the song are super romanic, seeing Alicai in tinged blue and pink-tinged silky backdrops, writing in her notebook and thinking about the dilemma of her relationship. Listen the song and watch the music video below!
