Alison Brie, Bo Burnham & Laverne Cox Join Carey Mulligan In Thriller ‘Promising Young Woman’ | Film News

Alison Brie, Bo Burnham, and Laverne Cox have all signed on to join Carey Mulligan in the thriller, Promising Young Woman. Focus Features is developing the project, which looks to be a step out of Mulligan’s usual wheelhouse. She will play Cassie, a woman with a promising future until a tragic event abruptly derailed it.

She’s now a medical school dropout and stuck living at home with her parents. However, she leads a double life, going to various clubs pretending to be drunk and allowing men to take her home with them. There, when they try to take advantage of her, she tries to scare them straight in an attempt to seek retribution for the trauma that has haunted her life.

While it’s a surprising role for Mulligan to take on, the premise sounds particularly timely in the #MeToo era. Collider reports that the film won’t just be about getting revenge on the perpetrators of the heinous crimes, but also those complicit.

Burnham will reportedly play the male lead, while Cox will play Mulligan’s boss at a local coffee shop. It’s unclear who Brie will be playing. The supporting cast is also pretty impressive, and includes Adam Brody, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, Max Greenfield, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

Emerald Fennell (The Crown) will direct from her own original screenplay, and said of the project: “I am beyond excited to be working with so many impossibly talented and wonderful people on Promising Young Woman. Frankly, I feel lucky to be allowed anywhere in the vicinity of so many geniuses, and I can’t wait to bring this twisted tale to life”.

With a great cast and a original, timely premise, Promising Young Woman should become one of the most talked about films upon release. A release date is not currently scheduled.
