HBO has released the trailer for its upcoming limited series, Sharp Objects. The story revolves around Amy Adams‘ reporter, fresh out of a stay at a psych hospital, who must return to her hometown to cover the murder of two preteen girls.
The trailer below is smartly shrouded in mystery, with HBO relying on the incredible creative team behind the show to market it to audiences. Sharp Objects is based on the book by Gone Girl author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn, comes from the producer of Get Out, with Big Little Lies director Jean-Marc Vallée helming the series and Mad Men‘s Marti Noxon serving as showrunner.

It’s hard to not get excited about the combination of all those names, along with a cast headlined by Adams, Patricia Clarkson, Chris Messina, Eliza Scanlen, Elizabeth Perkins and Matt Craven. As both of Flynn’s previous novels were adapted into feature films, it was expected that this would follow suit.
But the author said last year that she was: “really nervous it would just turn into a horror movie and lose a lot of the nuance. The mystery is as much about who Camille is and what happened in this town as it is about the murders”, so adapting it into a limited series and allowing the mystery to gestate looks like a good decision.
Sharp Objects premieres on HBO on Sunday, July 8.
