As was reported last week, Sony had three directors in mind to helm Venom 2. Andy Serkis, Rupert Wyatt and Travis Knight were on the shortlist. Yet from the start, Serkis was presented as the frontrunner, so it’s no surprise he’s landed the gig.
Serkis is no stranger to comic book movies, having played Ulysses Klaue in Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Black Panther, and obviously he’s the master of motion capture, best known for playing Gollum, King Kong and Caesar in the Planet Of The Apes prequels. That experience will surely help him with the many effects necessary for Venom.
This will be Serkis’ third time behind the camera, having previously directed Breathe and Mowgli. He will replace Ruben Fleischer, and probably gives this sequel added intrigue. Venom made a killing at the box office but wasn’t received particularly well. But perhaps Serkis will put his own stamp on the project. He’ll probably have plenty of interesting ideas for how the symbiote can be used, at least.
However, Serkis is still early into his directorial career and doesn’t really have a definitive style yet. And we don’t know what exactly Sony is aiming for with Venom 2. Darker? More comedy-focused? And will Spider-Man make an appearance? We’ll have to wait and see.
