Arkham Asylum, the spinoff series related to Matt Reeves‘ The Batman in the works at HBO Max, has found its showrunner. Antonio Campos, who recently fulfilled the same role on fellow HBO series The Staircase, will be in charge of the show, while also producing and directing a number of episodes.
This the third spinoff series related to The Batman, as HBO are also developing a show focusing on Colin Farrell‘s The Penguin and a Gotham PD series that will revolve around the inner workings of the Gotham City Police Department.
Arkham Asylum, named after Gotham’s Gotham’s prison and psychiatric facility that houses many of Batman’s nemeses, doesn’t have a plot description right now. However, Reeves previously described it as “like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.”
The show will likely be the darkest of The Batman spinoffs, and there’s no better showrunner for that tone that Campos, who has made a career out of examining the darkness in human minds. His psychological films Afterschool, Simon Killer, and Christine are all haunting works, and he’s taken those themes to the aforementioned The Staircase as well as Netflix series The Sinner.
Reeves will executive produce the show under his 6th & Idaho banner along with the company’s Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan. HBO are clearly trying to build out The Batman universe in much the same way that Disney have done with Star Wars. It’s no use just having a successful film franchise now; to really succeed is to have multiple must-see related streaming shows.
Hopefully there will be more news on all three Batman spinoffs in the near future, as HBO no doubt want to get them into production as soon as possible.
