Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan is set to release her new solo album, All My Friends on March 22 via Yep Roc Records. This 9-song collection, her first self-produced LP, draws inspiration from the 19th Amendment’s passage and the changing landscape of women’s rights in America. The album’s lead single and title track is out now.
The album reflects on the progress and challenges for American women since gaining the right to vote 100 years ago. O’Donovan weaves original indie folk songs influenced by suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt’s speeches and letters. The album features a mix of brass, orchestra, girls’ choir, and O’Donovan’s striking voice.
If you close your eyes while listening to title track “All My Friends”, you could find yourself projected to Tennessee summer of 1920 as the brass strikes, delving into a crucial moment for suffragism to the rhythm of the chorus that floods into your ears.
The single, released on Chapman Catt’s birthday, immerses us in camaraderie and unity, portraying women marching at dawn against oppression. O’Donovan imagines the “struggle of needing just one more state to ratify, and just how much weight that final vote held.”
Described as “a vocalist of unerring instinct” by the New York Times, O’Donovan has launched three highly-praised solo albums. Her 2022 album, Age Of Apathy, received three Grammy nominations.
The singer is gearing up for a global tour in 2024, with performances at renowned events like the Big Ears Festival and FreshGrass Bentonville. Her London debut at Barbican Hall on June 18 is highly anticipated.
“All My Friends” is now available on major streaming platforms, offering a beautiful message of female solidarity and a call to respect and learn from history. Listen to it and catch Aoife O’Donovan on tour in 2024!
